What Is an Event? The Unit GA4 Is Built On
DICTIONARY · ANALYTICS

What Is an Event in Analytics?

An event is a recorded interaction or occurrence such as a click, view or purchase.

In plain English

In GA4 everything is an event. A page view is an event, a scroll is an event, a purchase is an event. What distinguishes them is the name and the parameters attached.

Because events are cheap to create, accounts fill with near-duplicates. Naming discipline decided in advance is what keeps the data usable a year later.

What to know

The basic unit
Everything is one.
Named

Why it matters

An event naming convention agreed before implementation costs an hour and saves the annual exercise of working out which of four similar events anyone should trust.

Common mistakes

×Inconsistent naming across pages.
×Custom events where recommended ones exist.
×Events with no parameters, so they cannot be analysed.
×Dozens of events nobody uses.
