What Is an Exploration? Where GA4 Analysis Actually Happens
DICTIONARY · ANALYTICS

What Is an Exploration?

An exploration is GA4's flexible environment for analysing data.

In plain English

Standard reports are deliberately shallow. Explorations are where you build your own: free-form tables, funnels, path analysis, cohorts and segment overlaps.

Most people who find GA4 unhelpful have never opened one. The analysis the previous version offered in standard reports now lives here.

What to know

Custom analysis
Built rather than pre-set.
Several techniques
Free form, funnel, path, cohort, segment overlap.
Segment-driven
Comparing groups is the main use.
Sampling applies
At large volumes.

Why it matters

Two explorations cover most business questions: a funnel for the conversion path, and a free-form table segmented by traffic source. Both take minutes to build.

Common mistakes

×Never opening explorations.
×Building them and not saving or sharing them.
×Ignoring sampling notices on large datasets.
×Recreating standard reports rather than answering new questions.

FAQs

What should I build first?

A funnel for your main conversion path.

Why are standard reports so limited?
