What Is a Funnel? Measured Steps, Not a Shape
DICTIONARY · ANALYTICS

What Is a Funnel in Analytics?

A funnel is a sequence of steps users move through toward a desired outcome.

In plain English

In analytics it is a report rather than a theory: define the steps, and see how many people reached each one.

Its value is locating the worst transition. There is almost always one step markedly worse than the others, and fixing it is worth more than improving all the rest.

What to know

Defined steps
You specify them.
Shows drop-off per step
Which is the point.
Open or closed
Whether users must enter at step one.
Built in explorations
In GA4.

Why it matters

Overall conversion rate says there is a problem. A funnel says where. That difference is what separates fixing something from redesigning things that worked.

Common mistakes

×Steps defined by assumption rather than observed behaviour.
×No funnel at all, so drop-off is invisible.
×Fixing the easiest step rather than the worst.
×Closed funnels where people legitimately enter mid-way.

FAQs

How many steps should a funnel have?

Few enough to be readable. Four or five is usually plenty.
