DICTIONARY · WEB

What is a favicon?

The small icon associated with a website in browser interfaces.

In plain English

A favicon is the tiny icon that represents your site in browser tabs, bookmarks, history and on phone home screens. It also appears next to your listing in Google mobile search results.

It is a small detail that gets noticed in aggregate. A default globe icon in a row of branded tabs looks like an unfinished site, and it is a ten-minute fix.

What to know

It has to work very small
At sixteen pixels, a full logo becomes mush. Use a mark, a monogram or a single distinctive shape.
Several sizes are needed
Browsers, bookmarks and mobile home screens request different sizes. Modern tools generate the set from one source file.
It appears in mobile search
Google shows a site icon beside mobile results, so it is part of how your listing looks.
Test on dark backgrounds
An icon designed on white can disappear in a dark-themed browser. Check both.

Why it matters

Favicons are cheap brand consistency in the places people actually spend their attention, namely a crowded tab bar. When someone has your site open alongside twenty others, a recognisable icon is how they find their way back to it.

Common mistakes

×Leaving the platform default or a generic globe.
×Using a full logo with text, which is illegible at small sizes.
×Providing only one size, so mobile and bookmark icons look poor.
×Not checking how the icon reads on a dark background.

FAQs

What size should a favicon be?

Supply a square source at 512 pixels and generate the set from it. Design the mark so it survives at sixteen.

Does a favicon affect SEO?

Not rankings, but it appears next to mobile search results, so it affects how your listing looks and possibly click-through.
