What is UI?

User Interface, the visual and interactive elements people use.

In plain English

UI is the surface someone touches. Buttons, menus, forms, links, labels, icons, states. Everything that presents a choice or responds to an action.

It is often confused with UX. UI is the interface itself. UX is the experience of using it. You can have a beautiful interface that produces a miserable experience, usually by looking good and behaving unpredictably.

What to know

Consistency beats novelty
Buttons that look the same should behave the same. People learn your interface once, then stop thinking about it. Inventive controls make them think again every time.
States matter as much as the default
Hover, active, focus, disabled, loading, error, empty. A control with no visible states feels broken even when it works.
Labels are UI
The words on a button are part of the interface. Send is clearer than Submit, and Get the guide is clearer than either.
Touch targets have a minimum size
On mobile, anything smaller than about 44 pixels is a frustration. Small taps are the most common mobile UI failure.

Why it matters

The interface is where intent turns into action. Someone decided to enquire, and now they meet your form. Every ambiguity, every mis-sized button, every unlabelled field is a place where that decision can evaporate. UI work is cheap compared to the traffic you paid for.

Common mistakes

×Styling the default state and forgetting hover, focus and error states.
×Using icons without labels and assuming the meaning is obvious.
×Making tap targets too small on mobile.
×Prioritising visual novelty over patterns people already understand.

FAQs

What is the difference between UI and UX?

UI is the interface, the visible and interactive parts. UX is the whole experience of using the product, including things with no interface at all, like how long a reply takes.

Is UI just about how things look?

No. It covers behaviour and wording as much as appearance. A button label and a loading state are UI decisions.
