What Is a Featured Snippet?

A featured snippet is a short answer lifted from a page and displayed above the ordinary results, with a link to the source.

In plain English

The search engine chooses a passage from a page that already ranks well and presents it as the answer. You cannot request one; you can only make a page easy to extract from.

The winning pattern is consistent: a clear question as a heading, and a direct answer in the first two sentences beneath it.

What to know

Extracted, not submitted
Google selects the passage. There is no markup that requests it.
Formats
Paragraph, list, table or video, depending on the question.
Structure wins it
Question as a heading, answer immediately below, in plain language.
Already ranking
Snippets come from pages in the top results, so ranking comes first.

Why it matters

Snippets are the most winnable prominent placement in search, because they are earned by formatting rather than by authority. The same structure that wins them also makes a page extractable for AI answers.

Common mistakes

×Burying the answer in the middle of a long paragraph.
×Answering the question in a heading and then not answering it in the text.
×Chasing snippets on queries where the answer is all the reader needed.
×Assuming markup can request a snippet.

FAQs

Does a featured snippet reduce clicks?

Sometimes, for simple questions. For anything where the reader needs more, it increases them.

How do I win one?

Find queries where you already rank in the top five, then restructure the answer to be liftable.
