What Is a Rich Result? Enhanced Listings in Search
DICTIONARY · SEO

What Is a Rich Result?

A rich result is a search listing enhanced with extra detail drawn from structured data: stars, prices, images, FAQs or event dates.

In plain English

A rich result takes up more space and communicates more before the click, which usually means a higher share of the clicks available on that page.

Structured data makes a page eligible. It does not guarantee the enhancement, and Google has removed or reduced several rich result types over time.

What to know

Eligibility, not entitlement
Correct markup qualifies a page. Display remains Google's decision.
Types vary
Products, reviews, recipes, events, FAQs, breadcrumbs, videos, and more.
Must be accurate
Markup that misrepresents the page can lose eligibility entirely.
They change
Types get added, restricted and withdrawn. Do not build a strategy on one.

Why it matters

Rich results are the closest thing to free visibility in search, because they change how much space you occupy without changing your position. On commercial listings the click-through difference is substantial.

Common mistakes

×Assuming valid markup guarantees the enhancement.
×Marking up reviews that are not genuine, which risks eligibility.
×Adding FAQ markup to pages with no real FAQ.
×Never re-testing after a redesign changed the markup.

FAQs

Why is my rich result not showing?

Eligibility is not display. Check validation first, then accept that Google decides.

Are FAQ rich results still shown?

Availability has been reduced over time. Valid markup is still worth having for clarity.
