What is a franchise?

A business model where an operator uses another company brand and system under licence.

In plain English

In a franchise, the franchisor licenses its brand, method and systems to an operator who runs their own business using them, in exchange for fees and adherence to standards.

It is a way of expanding without funding every new location yourself, and a way of starting a business with a proven system rather than inventing one. Both sides trade some freedom for reduced risk.

What to know

Documented systems are the product
What is being sold is a repeatable method. Without genuine documentation there is nothing to franchise.
Standards protect everyone
One poor operator damages the brand for all of them. Enforcement is a core part of the franchisor job.
Marketing is usually split
National brand marketing from the franchisor, local marketing from the operator. The division needs to be explicit.
Fees and terms vary widely
Initial fee, ongoing royalty, marketing levy, term length, renewal and territory. All are negotiable and all matter.

Why it matters

Franchising is the logical endpoint of documented process. It only becomes possible when a business is genuinely systematised, which is why most small businesses that consider it discover the documentation work is the real project.

Common mistakes

×Franchising a business whose systems live in the founder head.
×Weak standards enforcement, which erodes the brand.
×Unclear division of marketing responsibility between franchisor and operator.
×Buying a franchise without checking the actual earnings of existing operators.

FAQs

What is the difference between franchising and licensing?

Licensing grants use of specific intellectual property. Franchising licenses the whole business system, with standards, training and ongoing support.

Can a service business be franchised?

Yes, provided delivery is documented consistently enough that someone else can reproduce it to the same standard.
