What is a partnership?

A business relationship in which parties collaborate toward shared objectives.

In plain English

A partnership is two businesses working together for mutual benefit. Referrals, joint offers, shared audiences, co-delivery. The term also describes a legal business structure, but the marketing sense is collaboration.

Good partnerships are among the most efficient growth routes available to small businesses, because you reach an audience that already trusts someone else. Most partnerships fail because nobody defined what each side actually does.

What to know

Complementary, not competing
The best partners serve the same customers with something adjacent. An accountant and a bookkeeper compete. An accountant and a marketing consultant do not.
Both sides must gain
Arrangements where one party benefits quietly stop being worked at. Reciprocity has to be real.
Define the mechanics
Who introduces whom, how, when, and what happens commercially. Enthusiastic vagueness produces nothing.
Trust is the asset being lent
A referral transfers someone else credibility to you. Handling it badly costs them, which is why partners are cautious.

Why it matters

Referral partnerships bring pre-qualified, pre-trusted enquiries at almost no acquisition cost. For consultancies and service businesses they frequently outperform every paid channel, and they are usually left to chance rather than managed deliberately.

Common mistakes

×Agreeing to partner in principle with no defined actions.
×Partnering with businesses that share your audience but not your standards.
×One-sided arrangements that quietly lapse.
×Never following up on how referred clients were handled.

FAQs

How do I find good partners?

Look at who else your customers already pay for adjacent needs. Those businesses have the audience and the trust.

Should partnerships be formalised?

Referral arrangements can be informal but should be explicit about mechanics. Anything involving shared revenue or delivery needs writing down.
