What Is GEO? Generative Engine Optimisation Explained
DICTIONARY · SEO

What Is GEO?

GEO, generative engine optimisation, is optimising to be cited by generative AI systems when they answer questions.

In plain English

The goal is being one of the sources an AI answer draws on. Since those sources come from ordinary indexes, the requirements overlap almost entirely with SEO.

What genuinely helps: being crawlable, being clear, being demonstrably experienced, and being recognised as an entity. What does not: any file, tag or trick sold as an AI-search shortcut.

What to know

Be retrievable
Crawlable, indexed, fast. There is no citation without retrieval.
Be extractable
Clear structure, one question per section, answers stated plainly.
Be corroborated
Recognised as an entity, described consistently, cited by others.
Be current
Stale content is a weaker source on anything that changes.

Why it matters

GEO matters as a framing: it moves the target from a click to a citation, and it makes brand recognition part of SEO. It does not matter as a product, because nothing in it is separable from doing SEO well.

Common mistakes

×Paying for GEO tactics based on mechanisms that do not exist.
×Treating it as a replacement for SEO rather than a consequence of it.
×Ignoring entity consistency, which affects whether you are recognised at all.
×Measuring nothing, so you cannot tell whether anything changed.

FAQs

Is GEO real?

The shift in how answers are assembled is real. The idea of a separate optimisation toolkit is not.

How do I measure it?

Track brand search, referral traffic from AI tools where visible, and citations you can observe manually.
