What Is AEO? Answer Engine Optimisation Explained
DICTIONARY · SEO

What Is AEO?

AEO, answer engine optimisation, is optimising content to be used as the answer rather than merely listed as a result.

In plain English

The name is newer than the practice. Making a page easy to extract an answer from is what won featured snippets years ago, and it is what earns citations in AI answers now.

It is a useful emphasis rather than a separate discipline. Google's current guidance says foundational SEO remains relevant and warns against chasing unsupported AI-search tactics.

What to know

Answer first
State the answer in the first sentences under a clear heading.
One question per section
A section covering three questions is extractable for none of them.
Plain language
Ambiguity and indirection make a passage unusable.
Credibility
Answers are drawn from sources judged trustworthy.

Why it matters

AEO is worth taking seriously as a writing discipline and worth ignoring as a product category. The practices it describes are good writing, clear structure and genuine expertise, and there is no separate toolkit.

Common mistakes

×Buying AEO services that promise mechanisms Google has said do not exist.
×Abandoning SEO fundamentals in favour of the new acronym.
×Writing indirectly, so nothing can be lifted as an answer.
×Assuming special schema is required. It is not.

FAQs

Is AEO different from SEO?

It is an emphasis within it. The underlying requirements are the same.

Do I need special markup?

No. Google has stated there are no special files or schema requirements for AI answers.
