What is a nameserver?

A server that provides DNS information for a domain.

In plain English

A nameserver holds the authoritative DNS records for your domain and answers queries about where things live. Your registrar records which nameservers to ask, and those nameservers hold the actual answers.

Practically, nameservers decide who controls your DNS. Point them at your host and you manage records in the hosting panel. Point them at a service like a CDN and you manage them there instead.

What to know

They are set at the registrar
Wherever you registered the domain, there is a nameserver setting. Changing it moves control of your DNS, not your website.
Usually a pair or more
Domains list at least two for redundancy. If one is unreachable, another answers.
Changing them moves all records
Switching nameservers means the new provider needs every record recreated, including email. Missing MX records is how businesses lose email during a migration.
CDNs often take over
Services that sit in front of your site typically ask you to change nameservers so they can manage DNS and route traffic.

Why it matters

Nameservers are the control point for your entire domain. Knowing which provider holds them saves hours when something needs changing, and copying every record before switching prevents the most common migration disaster, which is working website and dead email.

Common mistakes

×Changing nameservers before copying the existing records, especially MX for email.
×Not knowing which provider currently controls DNS when something needs fixing.
×Managing records at the old provider after the nameservers already moved.
×Leaving only one nameserver configured.

FAQs

What is the difference between DNS and a nameserver?

DNS is the system and the records. A nameserver is the machine that holds and serves those records for your domain.

Do I need to change nameservers to move my website?

Not always. If DNS stays where it is, you can just update the A record to the new server address.
