DICTIONARY · WEB

What is a subdomain?

A separate address created beneath a primary domain.

In plain English

A subdomain is a prefix on your domain that behaves like a separate address, for example a blog or shop section hosted separately from the main site. It can point at different hosting or a different platform entirely.

The recurring question is subdomain or subfolder. For most marketing content the subfolder is the safer default, because it keeps everything under one address and one accumulating authority.

What to know

It can live somewhere else
A subdomain can be hosted on completely different infrastructure. This is why platforms often hand you one.
Search engines treat it as related but separate
It is not a clean split, nor a clean merge. Signals do not flow between subdomain and main domain as freely as within one site.
Subfolder for content, subdomain for systems
Blog and resources belong in folders. Help desks, apps and staging environments are reasonable subdomains, usually for technical reasons.
Each one needs its own care
Analytics, sitemaps, SSL and tracking all need configuring separately. Two properties means twice the maintenance.

Why it matters

This choice quietly decides how your content compounds. Putting the blog on a subdomain because a platform made it easy is one of the most common ways businesses split their own search authority in half and never notice.

Common mistakes

×Putting the blog on a subdomain purely because a third-party platform defaults to it.
×Leaving a staging subdomain publicly crawlable and getting it indexed.
×Forgetting the SSL certificate does not automatically cover subdomains.
×Running separate analytics without configuring cross-domain tracking, so journeys look broken.

FAQs

Subdomain or subfolder for my blog?

A subfolder in almost every case. It keeps the content on the same site and contributing to the same authority.

Do subdomains hurt SEO?

Not inherently, but splitting content across them dilutes signals and doubles the technical work. Use them for a reason, not by default.
