What is a domain name?

The human-readable address used to identify a website.

In plain English

A domain name is the address people type instead of a string of numbers. You register it, you renew it, and while the registration holds it points at wherever your site is hosted.

It is one of the few decisions on a website that is genuinely hard to reverse. Changing domains means redirecting everything, updating every profile and asset, and accepting a period of turbulence in search.

What to know

Registration is a rental
You lease a domain for a period and renew it. Losing it to an expired card is a real and avoidable disaster.
Short, sayable, spellable
If you cannot say it down a phone line without repeating yourself, it will cost you traffic for as long as you own it.
The extension matters less than it used to
A country extension signals local focus, which is often an advantage. Beyond that, credibility comes from the site more than the suffix.
Domain and hosting are separate
The domain is the address, hosting is the space. They can be bought from different providers, and DNS connects them.

Why it matters

The domain is your brand address and your search identity. It carries every link, mention and piece of authority you ever earn. Choosing well costs nothing extra at the start, and choosing badly is a tax you pay on every business card, ad and search result afterwards.

Common mistakes

×Picking a clever or keyword-stuffed name that is impossible to say out loud.
×Letting a domain lapse because the renewal card expired.
×Registering with a provider that makes transferring away difficult.
×Changing domain for cosmetic reasons and losing accumulated search value.

FAQs

Does a keyword domain help rankings?

Marginally at best, and it often limits the brand. A memorable name serves you better than an exact-match phrase.

Should I buy multiple extensions?

Usually only if you need to protect an established brand. Otherwise the money is better spent on the site itself.
