What Is a Prompt?

A prompt is the input you give an AI model: the instruction, the context and the material it should work from.

In plain English

A prompt is not a search query. A query retrieves; a prompt briefs. The closer it resembles a brief you would give a competent colleague, the better the result.

Everything the answer depends on has to be in the prompt or reachable by the model. What you left out is the single most common reason output disappoints.
