What Is a System Prompt?

A system prompt is a standing instruction applied to every message in a session: the role, the rules, the tone and the constraints.

In plain English

Instead of repeating your requirements in each message, you state them once at the top level. The model treats them as the frame for everything that follows.

In any AI product, the system prompt is where behaviour is actually defined. It is the difference between a generic chat window and a tool that behaves like it belongs to your business.
