What Is Google Search Console? The Only Data Google Gives You
DICTIONARY · SEO

What Is Google Search Console?

Search Console is Google's free tool reporting how your site performs in search: the queries, the impressions, the clicks and the indexing problems.

In plain English

It is the only place you see real query data for your own site. Everything else, including every keyword tool, is an estimate built from other sources.

It is also the diagnostic record. Which pages are indexed, which were excluded and why, what Googlebot saw, and which structured data was detected.

What to know

Performance
Actual queries, impressions, clicks and average position for your site.
Indexing
Which URLs are indexed, which are excluded, and the reason for each.
URL Inspection
What Google knows about one URL, plus a live rendering test.
Enhancements
Core Web Vitals field data, mobile usability and structured data validity.

Why it matters

Search Console turns SEO from guesswork into diagnosis. The queries where you rank on the second page, with impressions and no clicks, are usually the fastest wins available on any site, and they exist nowhere else.

Common mistakes

×Never setting it up.
×Only looking at total clicks and ignoring the query report.
×Ignoring exclusion reasons in the indexing report.
×Comparing its numbers to analytics and assuming one is wrong. They measure different things.

FAQs

Is it free?

Yes, and it requires only verifying that you own the site.

Why do its numbers differ from analytics?

Search Console counts search impressions and clicks; analytics counts sessions on the site. They will never match.
