What Is Search Ranking? Position, and Why It Is a Poor Metric
DICTIONARY · SEO

What Is Search Ranking?

Search ranking is the position a page occupies in the results for a given query.

In plain English

Ranking is personalised, localised and device-dependent, so there is rarely one true position. Two people searching the same words can see different orders.

It is also less meaningful than it used to be. Position three on a page dominated by ads, a local pack and an AI summary is not what position three used to mean.

What to know

Not absolute
Location, device, history and time all change what is shown.
Position is relative to the page
What sits above you decides what a position is worth.
Report averages carefully
An average position across many queries hides more than it reveals.
Better metrics
Clicks, impressions and conversions from Search Console.

Why it matters

Rankings are a useful diagnostic and a poor objective. A page that moved from position eight to five and gained no clicks has not achieved anything, which is why click and enquiry data should lead any report.

Common mistakes

×Reporting rankings instead of traffic and enquiries.
×Tracking vanity keywords that never convert.
×Comparing rank tracker data to Search Console and assuming one is broken.
×Ignoring what occupies the space above your result.

FAQs

Should I track rankings at all?

For a handful of important queries, yes, as a diagnostic. Not as the headline metric.

Why does my rank tracker disagree with Search Console?

Trackers sample one location and device. Search Console averages real impressions.
