What is an SSL certificate?

A digital certificate used to establish encrypted HTTPS connections.

In plain English

An SSL certificate lets a site serve pages over HTTPS. It proves the domain is what it claims to be and encrypts traffic between the browser and the server, which is why the padlock appears.

It is now a baseline requirement rather than an upgrade. Browsers warn on plain HTTP, forms are flagged as insecure, and most hosts issue certificates free and renew them automatically.

What to know

It enables encryption
Data sent between visitor and server is unreadable in transit. That matters for any form, login or payment.
Certificates expire
Most renew automatically. When automation breaks, visitors get a full-page browser warning, which is as damaging as an outage.
Coverage is specific
A certificate covers named domains. Subdomains need a wildcard or their own certificate.
It does not make a site secure
It secures the connection. Weak passwords, outdated plugins and unpatched software are untouched by it.

Why it matters

Without HTTPS, browsers actively tell visitors your site is not secure, and that ends most journeys. It is also a long-standing ranking signal. Since certificates are usually free and automatic, the only real work is making sure renewal never silently fails.

Common mistakes

×Letting a certificate expire and greeting visitors with a browser warning.
×Serving mixed content, where the page is HTTPS but some images or scripts are not.
×Migrating to HTTPS without redirecting the HTTP versions, leaving two copies of the site.
×Believing a certificate is a substitute for actual site security.

FAQs

Do I need to pay for an SSL certificate?

Usually not. Most hosts provide free automated certificates that are technically equivalent for standard use.

Does HTTPS affect SEO?

Yes. It is a confirmed lightweight ranking signal, and the trust and browser-warning effects matter more than the ranking factor itself.
