What Is Urgency? A Reason to Act Now, If There Is One
DICTIONARY · COPYWRITING

What Is Urgency in Copywriting?

Urgency is messaging that encourages action sooner rather than later.

In plain English

Its purpose is countering delay. A reader who intends to act later usually does not, and a genuine deadline converts intention into action.

False urgency is the problem. Countdown timers that reset, deadlines that never arrive and permanent last chance offers train customers to disbelieve everything else you say.

What to know

Real deadlines only
A date something actually changes.
States the reason
Why now, not just act now.
Once
Repeated urgency stops being urgent.
Verifiable
A deadline the reader can check.

Why it matters

Legitimate urgency works and is available more often than people think: enrolment dates, seasonal relevance, capacity limits, price changes. Manufacturing it is unnecessary and costly.

Common mistakes

×Countdown timers that reset on reload.
×Deadlines that pass with no consequence.
×Permanent limited-time offers.
×Urgency with no stated reason.

FAQs

Does urgency still work?

Genuine urgency does. Manufactured urgency is widely recognised and discounted.

What if I have no deadline?

Then do not claim one. Use specificity of benefit instead.
