What is a URL?

The address used to locate a resource on the web.

In plain English

A URL is the full address of something on the web. Protocol, domain, path, and sometimes parameters after a question mark. Every page, image and file has one.

For marketing, the part that matters is the path. It appears in search results, gets pasted into emails and messages, and gives both people and crawlers a hint about what the page contains.

What to know

Anatomy of a URL
The protocol says how to fetch it, the domain says where from, the path says which resource, and parameters pass extra instructions.
Short and readable wins
Lowercase words separated by hyphens, no dates unless the content is time-bound, no strings of numbers. A URL should be guessable.
Changing one has consequences
A new URL is a new page as far as search engines are concerned. Old rankings and links stay with the old address unless you redirect.
Parameters need care
Tracking and filter parameters can create endless near-duplicate URLs. Canonical tags and crawl rules keep that under control.

Why it matters

URLs are permanent in a way most marketing assets are not. They get printed, linked and bookmarked. Getting the structure right early avoids years of redirects, and a clean readable URL improves click-through from search because people can see what they are getting.

Common mistakes

×Changing URLs during a redesign without mapping redirects.
×Stuffing keywords into a long unreadable path.
×Leaving dates in URLs for content you intend to keep updating.
×Letting tracking parameters generate duplicate versions of the same page.

FAQs

Do keywords in URLs help SEO?

A little, mostly by making the URL clear to people scanning results. It is a minor factor and not worth contorting the structure for.

Should I change my URL structure?

Only if the current one is genuinely causing problems. Changing structure means redirecting everything, and there is always some loss.
