What Are UTM Parameters?

UTM parameters are tracking parameters added to URLs to identify campaign traffic.

In plain English

Five parameters appended to a link: source, medium, campaign, plus term and content for detail. Analytics reads them and classifies the visit accordingly.

The tags are trivial; the convention is not. Without agreed values you get facebook, Facebook and FB as three separate sources, and the report becomes unreadable.

What to know

Five parameters
Source, medium, campaign, term, content.
Read by analytics
Overriding the referrer.
Case-sensitive
Which fragments data if inconsistent.
Needs a convention
Documented and shared.

Why it matters

A shared spreadsheet of agreed UTM values costs nothing and prevents the fragmentation that makes campaign reporting worthless. It is the highest-value analytics admin there is.

Common mistakes

×Inconsistent capitalisation.
×No documented convention.
×Tagging internal links, which breaks sessions.
×Untagged campaigns falling into direct.

FAQs

Should I tag internal links?

No. It restarts sessions and corrupts attribution.

Which parameters are required?

Source and medium at minimum; campaign for anything time-bound.
