What Is a Traffic Source? Where Visitors Came From
DICTIONARY · ANALYTICS

What Is a Traffic Source?

A traffic source is the source from which visitors arrive.

In plain English

Google, a newsletter, a specific website, a social platform. It is the named origin of the visit, recorded from the referrer or from campaign parameters.

A large share of it is wrong. Anything without a referrer or a tag lands in direct, which is why direct is usually the biggest and least useful line in the report.

What to know

From referrer or tags
Whichever is available.
Falls back to direct
When neither is present.
Improved by tagging
Every campaign link tagged.
Paired with medium
Source alone is ambiguous.

Why it matters

Tagging every link you control is the single change that makes acquisition reporting usable. Untagged campaigns are indistinguishable from people typing your address.

Common mistakes

×Untagged campaign links.
×Reading direct traffic as brand awareness.
×No naming convention, so sources fragment.
×Comparing source data across periods with different tagging.

FAQs

Why is direct traffic so high?

Untagged links, app referrals and private sharing all land there.

How do I improve source accuracy?

Tag every link you control with UTM parameters.
