What Is Visual Content?

Visual content communicates primarily through images, graphics or visual media.

In plain English

Photographs, diagrams, charts, screenshots, infographics. Its advantage is speed: a relationship, a process or a comparison can be understood in a glance that would take three paragraphs.

The practicalities get overlooked. Images need alt text to be accessible and indexable, compression to be fast, and consistency to look like they belong to one brand.

What to know

Explains relationships fast
Processes, comparisons, structures.
Needs alt text
For accessibility and for image search.
Needs compression
Uncompressed images are the most common speed problem.
Consistency matters
A visual style, not a collection of stock images.

Why it matters

Diagrams do work no prose can. A process with five stages and two decision points is much clearer drawn than described, and readers will use the drawing.

Common mistakes

×Stock photography that adds nothing.
×No alt text.
×Uncompressed images slowing the page.
×Infographics with more decoration than information.

FAQs

When is a diagram better than text?

Whenever the subject is a structure, a process or a comparison.

Do infographics still work?

As on-page explanation, yes. As a link-building tactic, much less than they did.
