What Is Brand Positioning? The Space You Choose to Occupy
DICTIONARY · BRANDING

What Is Brand Positioning?

Brand positioning is the space a brand deliberately occupies relative to its competitors.

In plain English

It answers what you want to be the obvious choice for, and for whom. A position is only real if it excludes something, because a brand that claims everything occupies nothing.

Positioning is about the alternatives as much as about you. The same brand reads differently depending on what it is being compared against.

What to know

Relative
Defined against the alternatives available.
Exclusive
Owning one thing means declining others.
Held by the customer
Their perception is the position, not your statement.
Consistently expressed
Repeated long enough to register.

Why it matters

Positioning determines what you can charge and who you attract. A brand positioned as the specialist for a specific situation competes on fit; one positioned on nothing in particular competes on price.

Common mistakes

×Positioning statements that describe the category rather than the brand.
×Claiming several positions at once.
×Positioning head-on against a much larger competitor's strength.
×Changing position with each campaign.

FAQs

How do I write a positioning statement?

For whom, what you offer, why you rather than the alternative. Three clauses, no adjectives.

Can two brands hold the same position?

In the customer's mind, only one usually does. The second is remembered as the alternative.
