What Is Brand Differentiation?

Brand differentiation is making a brand meaningfully distinct from the alternatives.

In plain English

Two conditions have to hold: the difference has to be real, and it has to matter to the customer. Different and irrelevant is a curiosity; relevant and unremarkable is table stakes.

Most claimed differentiation fails the first test. Quality, service and expertise are claimed by everyone in every category, which makes them the definition of undifferentiated.

What to know

Real
Verifiable, not asserted.
Relevant
Something the buyer weighs in the decision.
Defensible
Hard enough to copy that it lasts.
Often about focus
Serving one situation completely is a durable difference.

Why it matters

Where differentiation is absent, the only remaining variable is price. Most price pressure is a differentiation problem presented as a market problem.

Common mistakes

×Claiming quality or service as a difference.
×A genuine difference nobody cares about.
×Copying the leader's position rather than finding an unoccupied one.
×Differentiating on something replicable in a month.

FAQs

What if I am not different?

Narrow who you serve. Focus is the most available form of difference.

How do I test differentiation?

Put a competitor's name on your messaging. If it still works, you are not differentiated.
