What is entrepreneurship?

The process of creating, building and growing a business or venture.

In plain English

Entrepreneurship is building something commercial where nothing existed, and carrying the risk of it not working. It is a process rather than a personality type, which is the part the mythology tends to obscure.

In practice most of it is unglamorous. Finding out whether anyone wants the thing, working out what it should cost, and doing the same unfinished admin every week while looking for the next customer.

What to know

It is mostly deciding under uncertainty
You rarely have enough information. The skill is making a reasonable call, watching what happens and correcting quickly.
Risk is the defining feature
Entrepreneurs carry the downside. That is what separates it from running someone else business, and it is why control matters so much to people who do it.
Selling is not optional
Nobody outsources their way out of it early on. If you will not have the sales conversations, the venture stalls regardless of the idea.
Persistence beats brilliance
Most successful small businesses are ordinary ideas executed consistently for longer than competitors were willing to.

Why it matters

Understanding entrepreneurship as a process, not a trait, changes how you approach it. Processes can be learned, measured and improved. Waiting to feel like an entrepreneur is a way of postponing the work that would make you one.

Common mistakes

×Perfecting the product before finding out whether anyone will pay for it.
×Confusing being busy with making progress.
×Refusing to sell, and hoping marketing will do it invisibly.
×Copying the tactics of businesses at a completely different stage.

FAQs

Do I need a business plan to start?

You need clarity on who you serve, what you charge and how you reach them. A full formal plan matters mainly when you need external finance.

Is entrepreneurship a personality type?

No. It is a set of decisions and habits. Plenty of successful founders are cautious, quiet and risk-averse by nature.
