What is an entrepreneur?

Someone who creates and develops a business or venture.

In plain English

An entrepreneur builds a business and carries the risk of it. The word covers an enormous range, from someone freelancing alone to a founder raising millions, and the day-to-day realities of those two are almost unrelated.

It has also become an identity people wear before doing the work. The useful version is simpler. If you are creating something commercial and bearing the consequences, you are an entrepreneur, whatever your business card says.

What to know

The job changes constantly
Early on you do everything. Later the job becomes deciding what to stop doing and who should do it instead.
Cash literacy is essential
You do not need to be an accountant, but not understanding margin and cash flow is how profitable-looking businesses run out of money.
Isolation is a real cost
Working without colleagues to test your thinking against is one of the harder parts. Peer networks are not networking fluff, they are quality control.
Being the brand cuts both ways
A personal brand accelerates trust and makes the business harder to sell or step back from. Worth entering deliberately.

Why it matters

Understanding the role for what it is, mostly decision-making and selling, helps you spend your time on what only you can do. Most founders I speak to are doing several jobs that someone else could do better and cheaper, while the decisions only they can make go unmade.

Common mistakes

×Holding on to work that should have been delegated a year ago.
×Learning finance late, usually during a cash crisis.
×Building a business entirely dependent on your personal involvement.
×Consuming founder content instead of talking to customers.

FAQs

Is a freelancer an entrepreneur?

Broadly yes, in that you carry the risk and find your own clients. The distinction people draw is whether you are building something that can operate without you.

What skill matters most early on?

Selling, closely followed by understanding your numbers. Everything else can wait or be bought in.
