What Is FAB? Features, Advantages, Benefits
DICTIONARY · COPYWRITING

What Is FAB?

FAB is a framework for explaining an offer's value: features, advantages and benefits.

In plain English

A feature is what it is. An advantage is what that allows. A benefit is what the customer gets. The chain matters because each step translates the previous one into something the reader cares about.

Most product copy stops at features, which requires the reader to do the translation. Most of them will not bother.

What to know

Feature
The factual characteristic.
Advantage
What that characteristic enables.
Benefit
The outcome for this specific customer.
Complete the chain
Every feature worth mentioning needs its benefit stated.

Why it matters

FAB is the most practical antidote to specification-sheet copy. Working the chain forces you to say why each feature is on the page at all.

Common mistakes

×Listing features and stopping.
×Benefits so general they apply to any product.
×Skipping features entirely, which loses buyers who need the detail.
×The same benefit claimed for every feature.

FAQs

Should copy lead with benefits or features?

Benefits for persuasion, features for verification. Considered purchases need both.

What if the benefit is obvious?

State it anyway. What is obvious internally rarely is externally.
