What Is a Benefit? The Outcome the Customer Gets
DICTIONARY · COPYWRITING

What Is a Benefit in Copywriting?

A benefit is the positive outcome a customer gets from a feature.

In plain English

A feature is what the thing has; a benefit is what changes for the person because of it. The translation is the copywriter's job, not the reader's.

Generic benefits do not work. Save time and grow your business are claimed universally, which makes them invisible. Specific benefits name the situation and the change.

What to know

Follows from a feature
Every benefit has a mechanism behind it.
Specific
Names the situation, not a general improvement.
In the customer's terms
What they would say, not what you would.
Verifiable
Ideally supported by evidence somewhere on the page.

Why it matters

Feature lists require the reader to work out why they should care. Most will not, which is why benefit translation is the single most reliable copy improvement.

Common mistakes

×Benefits so general they apply to anything.
×Claiming a benefit with no feature behind it.
×Every feature assigned the same benefit.
×Benefits stated in internal language.

FAQs

How do I find the real benefit?

Ask a customer what changed after they bought. Their answer is the benefit.

Benefits or features first?

Benefits to persuade, features to verify. Both are needed for considered purchases.
