What Is Organic Traffic? Unpaid Search Visitors
DICTIONARY · ANALYTICS

What Is Organic Traffic?

Organic traffic is visitors arriving through unpaid search results.

In plain English

Someone searched, saw a result, clicked it, and no advertising was involved. It is the traffic SEO work is meant to produce.

Analytics and Search Console will not agree on the number. Search Console counts clicks from search; analytics counts sessions that loaded a tag. Both are right about different things.

What to know

Unpaid search only
Not ads.
Counted as sessions
In analytics.
Differs from Search Console
Which counts clicks.
Segmentable
By landing page and by search engine.

Why it matters

For SEO reporting, Search Console is the better source of what search did; analytics is the better source of what happened afterwards. Using each for its own question avoids reconciling them.

Common mistakes

×Trying to reconcile analytics and Search Console.
×Reporting organic sessions with no conversion data.
×Paid search traffic misclassified as organic through bad tagging.
×Judging SEO on total traffic rather than by landing page.

FAQs
