What Is Schema Markup? Telling Search Engines What a Page Contains
DICTIONARY · SEO

What Is Schema Markup?

Schema markup is structured data added to a page, using the schema.org vocabulary, describing what the page contains in a form machines can read reliably.

In plain English

Instead of leaving a search engine to infer that a number is a price and a name is an author, you state it explicitly. JSON-LD is the recommended format.

It is not a ranking factor in itself. What it does is make a page eligible for enhanced result formats, and remove ambiguity about what the content means.

What to know

JSON-LD
The recommended format, added as a script block rather than woven into the HTML.
Types that matter
Article, Product, FAQ, LocalBusiness, Organisation, Recipe, Event, Breadcrumb.
Must match the page
Marking up content that is not visible on the page is a violation.
Testable
Validate with the Rich Results Test before and after publishing.

Why it matters

Schema is how you become eligible for the result formats that occupy the most space: review stars, prices, FAQs, event details. It also helps establish your organisation as a recognised entity, which matters for AI answers.

Common mistakes

×Marking up content that does not appear on the page.
×Multiple conflicting schema blocks from different plugins.
×Assuming schema alone will lift rankings.
×Never validating, so a syntax error silently disables everything.

FAQs

Does schema improve rankings?

Not directly. It makes richer results possible, which improves clicks.

Do I need special markup for AI search?

No. Google has said there are no special files or schema requirements for AI Overviews.
