What Is a USP? The One Thing Only You Can Claim
DICTIONARY · FUNDAMENTALS

What Is a Unique Selling Proposition?

A unique selling proposition is the specific thing you offer that competitors cannot claim.

In plain English

A value proposition explains why someone should buy. A USP is narrower: the one element that is genuinely yours alone.

Most stated USPs fail the test immediately. Quality service, competitive pricing and a personal approach are claimed by everyone, which makes them table stakes rather than differentiation.

What to know

Actually unique
Something a competitor cannot honestly say.
Specific
A verifiable fact, not an adjective.
Relevant
Unique and irrelevant is a curiosity, not a USP.
Defensible
Hard to copy, or you will need a new one shortly.

Why it matters

A real USP makes marketing much easier, because you stop arguing about degree and start stating a fact. Where none exists, the honest response is to build one rather than to claim one.

Common mistakes

×Claiming quality, service or price as a USP.
×Something unique that no customer cares about.
×A USP a competitor can replicate in a month.
×Inventing one instead of building one.

FAQs

What if I do not have a USP?

Compete on being specific about who you serve. That is often more durable than a feature.

USP or value proposition?

The value proposition is the whole argument. The USP is the part only you can say.
