What is value creation?

The process of producing something customers consider valuable.

In plain English

Value creation is making something people genuinely want, at a cost lower than what they will pay for it. The gap between those two figures is where a business exists.

The word considered is doing the work in that definition. Value is decided by the customer, not by how much effort went in. Plenty of hard, expensive work creates nothing anybody will pay for.

What to know

The customer defines it
Effort, craft and cost are inputs. Value is whatever the buyer believes they are getting.
Communicating it is part of creating it
Value the customer cannot perceive does not affect their decision. This is the most common gap in small business marketing.
It is comparative
Value is judged against alternatives, including doing nothing. Your competition includes inaction.
Capture requires pricing
Creating value and capturing it are separate acts. Businesses that create plenty and capture little are usually underpricing.

Why it matters

Most positioning and pricing problems trace back to a mismatch between the value created and the value communicated. When clients say a price feels high, it is far more often a value clarity problem than a price problem.

Common mistakes

×Assuming effort translates automatically into perceived value.
×Adding features nobody asked for instead of solving the core problem better.
×Creating substantial value and pricing as though you had not.
×Describing what you do rather than what the customer gets.

FAQs

How do I know what customers value?

Ask them, and pay attention to what they mention unprompted when explaining why they bought. It is rarely the thing you are proudest of.

Is value the same as price?

No. Value is the benefit perceived, price is what you charge. The gap between them is why a customer buys.
