In plain English
A competitive advantage is something you have or do that competitors cannot easily match, and that customers actually care about. Both halves are required.
Most claimed advantages fail one of the two tests. Quality service and attention to detail are claimed by everyone, so they are not advantages. A genuinely unusual specialism, a cost structure others cannot match, or a reputation built over a decade are.
What to know
Why it matters
Positioning depends on this. If you cannot state why someone should choose you over the alternatives in a sentence they would find persuasive, marketing has to work much harder and price becomes the deciding factor by default.
Common mistakes
FAQs
How do I find my competitive advantage?
Ask recent customers why they chose you rather than the alternatives. Their answers are usually more specific and more useful than anything internal.
Is being cheaper an advantage?
Only if your cost structure genuinely supports it. Otherwise it is a temporary position that ends in a price war you lose.
