What is a moat?

A durable advantage that makes a business difficult to compete against.

In plain English

A moat is a competitive advantage that lasts. Not something you are currently better at, but something structural that makes attacking you unattractive.

The usual sources are network effects, switching costs, brand, scale advantages, and genuinely protected intellectual property. Everything else erodes as competitors observe what works and copy it.

What to know

Durability is the defining test
Any advantage that survives a competitor deliberately trying to remove it counts. Most do not.
Switching costs are underrated
When leaving you is genuinely disruptive, customers stay. Integration, data and habit all create this.
Reputation compounds slowly
A decade of consistent visible expertise is very hard to replicate quickly, which makes it a real moat for consultancies.
Small businesses build narrow ones
Being deeply embedded in one niche or one community is achievable, and it is a proper moat at that scale.

Why it matters

Thinking in moats reframes strategy from what can we do now to what will still be true in five years. Marketing that builds a moat, reputation, audience, published expertise, keeps paying long after campaigns stop.

Common mistakes

×Mistaking a temporary lead for a durable advantage.
×Assuming a product feature is defensible when it is easily copied.
×Neglecting the slow assets, reputation and audience, in favour of immediate tactics.
×Building switching costs so aggressive they read as hostage-taking.

FAQs

Can a small business have a moat?

Yes, usually narrow ones. Deep specialism, local reputation, embedded relationships and published expertise all qualify.

Is a brand a moat?

A genuinely trusted brand is, because it takes years and consistency to build. A logo and a colour palette are not.
