DICTIONARY · BUSINESS

What is a freelancer?

An independent professional who sells skills or services to clients.

In plain English

A freelancer sells their skills directly to clients, usually project by project or by retainer. Writers, designers, developers, photographers, marketers. You are the product and the business at once.

It offers control and variety in exchange for income that is never guaranteed. The two skills that decide how comfortable it is are pricing and pipeline, and neither is the craft you were hired for.

What to know

You are selling capability, not hours
Clients buy an outcome. Framing your work as time makes it a commodity and caps what you can charge.
A narrow specialism raises rates
Generalists compete on price with everyone. Specialists are sought out and can charge accordingly.
Pipeline needs constant attention
The work that arrives next month comes from conversations this month, including the months you are fully booked.
Contracts and deposits are not optional
Scope creep and late payment are the two structural risks. Both are solved on paper before the work starts.

Why it matters

Freelancing rewards marketing skill more than most people expect. The best freelancers I know are rarely the most technically gifted in their field, they are the ones who are clear about who they help and visible to those people consistently.

Common mistakes

×Pricing by the hour and staying there.
×Marketing only when work runs dry.
×Taking on badly defined projects without a written scope.
×Positioning as able to do anything, which reads as nothing in particular.

FAQs

How should a freelancer price work?

By project or value wherever possible, based on the outcome. Hourly rates penalise you for getting faster and better.

Where do freelance clients come from?

Mostly referrals and visibility in the places your clients already look. A specific specialism makes both far easier.
