What is networking?

Building professional relationships that may create knowledge, opportunities or business.

In plain English

Networking is building relationships with people in and around your field, before you need anything from them. Events, online communities, introductions, staying in touch.

It has a poor reputation because of its worst version, collecting contacts and pitching strangers. The useful version is slower, more specific and mostly consists of being helpful and visible over time.

What to know

Give before asking
Useful introductions, honest advice, sharing what you know. Relationships built this way produce work later, without being asked to.
Depth over volume
Twenty people who know exactly what you do beats five hundred who vaguely recognise your name.
Be specific about what you do
Vague descriptions produce no referrals. People can only refer you if they can recognise the situation you fit.
Consistency matters more than events
Staying in contact through the year does more than an intense week at a conference.

Why it matters

For consultants and service businesses, referral is usually the highest-converting source of work and the one that requires the least persuasion. Networking is how that channel is built, and it is the least measurable and most durable marketing most independents do.

Common mistakes

×Attending events only when work is short.
×Pitching immediately instead of establishing what you do.
×Describing yourself so broadly nobody can refer you.
×Collecting contacts and never following up.

FAQs

I dislike networking events. What else works?

Online communities, one-to-one conversations, and publishing what you know. Visible expertise attracts the same relationships without a room.

How do I make networking produce work?

Be memorably specific about who you help, stay in touch usefully, and be the person others are comfortable recommending.
