DICTIONARY · BUSINESS

What is an agency?

A business that provides specialised services to clients.

In plain English

An agency delivers specialist services to multiple clients using a team. Marketing, advertising, design, development. The client gets a range of skills without employing them.

Agency quality varies more than almost any other purchase a small business makes. The model depends on selling senior expertise and delivering with junior time, which can be perfectly reasonable or the entire problem.

What to know

You are buying a team
The advantage over a freelancer is breadth and continuity. Someone covers holidays and there is more than one skill available.
Ask who does the work
The person who wins the pitch is often not the person doing the delivery. Clarify that before signing.
Retainers need defined deliverables
Vague monthly retainers drift into activity reporting. Agree what is produced and what is measured.
Reporting should answer commercial questions
Impressions and rankings are inputs. Ask what happened to enquiries, sales and cost per acquisition.

Why it matters

For most small businesses an agency is one of the largest discretionary spends in the marketing budget, and the least scrutinised. Knowing how the model works, and what to ask, is the difference between buying capability and buying activity reports.

Common mistakes

×Choosing on pitch polish rather than evidence of comparable results.
×Not establishing who is actually doing the work.
×Accepting reports full of activity metrics with no commercial outcome.
×Signing long retainers with no defined deliverables or exit.

FAQs

Agency or freelancer?

A freelancer for a single deep specialism and lower cost, an agency for breadth, continuity and capacity. Both work when scoped properly.

What should I ask before hiring an agency?

Who does the work, what is delivered monthly, what is measured, what happens if it underperforms, and how you leave.
