What is a consultant?

A professional who provides specialised expertise to help solve business problems.

In plain English

A consultant is brought in for judgement. The client has a problem they cannot diagnose or a decision they do not want to get wrong, and they are buying experience of having seen it before.

That is different from doing the work, though many consultants do both. The distinction matters for pricing, because advice that saves a wrong decision is worth considerably more than the hours it took to give.

What to know

Diagnosis is the product
Most value is created in working out what the actual problem is. Clients frequently arrive certain of a cause that turns out to be a symptom.
Credibility precedes the sale
Nobody buys judgement from a stranger. Consulting work follows visible expertise, which is why writing and speaking matter so much in this model.
Scope it or it sprawls
Consulting engagements expand naturally as trust builds. Without defined scope, that goodwill becomes unpaid work.
Advice needs implementation
Recommendations nobody executes help nobody. Either stay involved through delivery or hand over something genuinely actionable.

Why it matters

Consulting is one of the clearest examples of value-based pricing in practice. The same two days of work can be worth a modest fee or a transformative one depending on the decision it informs, and that gap is almost entirely about positioning and demonstrated expertise.

Common mistakes

×Charging day rates for advice that changes six-figure decisions.
×Delivering a report with no realistic path to implementation.
×Letting scope drift because the relationship is going well.
×Building no public expertise, then wondering why enquiries do not arrive.

FAQs

What is the difference between a consultant and a freelancer?

A freelancer usually does the work. A consultant is usually paid for judgement, diagnosis and direction. Many people do both.

How do consultants get clients?

Reputation, referrals and demonstrated expertise. Publishing what you know is the most reliable route for independents.
