A Bit of History

Sankey Tank Bangalore

Would you believe that Sankey Tank dates back to the 19th century?

Built in 1882 by Colonel Richard Hieram Sankey, hence the name, it was initially designed to meet the water supply needs of Bangalore’s Cantonment area.

Today, though, it’s far more than a reservoir. It’s a lifeline for the neighborhood.

Every time I walk around the lake, I marvel at how seamlessly this space blends history, nature, and everyday life.

Despite being in the middle of the city, there’s a stillness to the place that’s almost therapeutic.

What to Expect at Sankey Tank

Sankey Tank Park

The Park & Walking Path

The Sankey Tank Park is beautifully maintained. The paved walking path that loops around the lake is roughly 1.5 km, perfect for a morning jog or a lazy evening walk.

I usually go there around 7 AM when the light filters through the trees and the city hasn’t fully woken up. It’s pure bliss.

Benches line the path, and you’ll often see people reading, meditating, or just soaking in the view of the tranquil Sankey Tank lake.

The Garden

One of the highlights is the Sankey Tank Garden.

It’s not huge, but it’s lush and green, with plenty of flowering plants and shaded areas.

Families often bring their kids here for a breath of fresh air.

It’s also a favorite with elderly folks who enjoy the calm environment.

The Sankey Tank Swimming Pool

The Sankey Tank Swimming Pool

Ah yes, the Sankey Tank Swimming Pool, a Bangalore institution in its own right!

Managed by the BBMP, it’s open to the public and surprisingly affordable.

I’ve dipped in here a few times during summer, and it’s one of the cleanest public pools I’ve come across.

You’ll find options for both adults and kids, with classes and training sessions running in the mornings and evenings.

Just make sure you check the Sankey Tank swimming pool timings beforehand, especially since it’s closed on Thursdays.

Sankey Tank Location & Directions

Sankey Tank is located in Malleswaram, one of Bangalore’s oldest and most charming neighborhoods.

It’s well-connected by public transport, and if you’re taking the metro, get down at Mantri Square Sampige Road Station. The tank is just a short auto ride away.

If you’re searching online for “Sankey Tank location” or asking Google for “Sankey Tank directions from my location”, trust me, you’ll get there easily.

And if you’re driving, there’s decent parking available outside the premises.

If you’re wondering how to spend your time here, here are a few ideas from my own visits:

  • Birdwatching – You’d be surprised at the variety of birds around the lake.
  • Photography – Perfect lighting, scenic backdrops, and reflections on water.
  • Jogging or Walking – The loop is ideal for daily fitness.
  • Reading or Journaling – Quiet corners to spend some quality “me time.”

Nearby Shopping & Food Stops

Once you’re done with the lake, walk around Malleswaram, one of Bangalore’s most iconic areas.

I often stop by for a filter coffee at CTR or grab a snack at Hallimane.

If you’re in the mood for a bit of shopping, head to 8th Cross Malleswaram, it’s just around the corner.

My Final Thoughts

Sankey Tank isn’t just a lake.

It’s one of Bangalore’s last-standing symbols of balance between nature and urban life.

Every visit reminds me that amidst all the chaos, our city still has corners of calm.

The chirping of birds, the rustling trees, the slow joggers, the laughter of kids, it all blends into an experience that’s more than the sum of its parts.

If you haven’t been yet, do yourself a favor and plan a visit.

Go solo, take a friend, or bring your family.

Whatever your reason, Sankey Tank in Bangalore will give you a moment to breathe, smile, and reconnect with nature and with yourself.
