What is outsourcing?

Hiring external people or businesses to perform specific activities.

In plain English

Outsourcing hands a defined activity to someone outside the business. Bookkeeping, design, development, advertising management, content production. You buy capability without employing it.

It works well for specialist work you need occasionally and badly for anything requiring deep context you have never written down. The success rate depends almost entirely on how clearly the work is defined.

What to know

Define the output, not the hours
Specify what you want delivered and to what standard. Vague briefs produce disappointing work and both sides blame the other.
Keep strategy, buy execution
Direction should stay with the business. Handing over the thinking as well as the doing rarely ends well.
Context is your responsibility
Nobody external understands your customers as well as you do. Supplying that context is part of the job.
Manage it or it drifts
Outsourced work needs a review rhythm. Unmanaged suppliers optimise for what is easy to report.

Why it matters

For small businesses outsourcing is often the only realistic way to access specialist skills. The failures are nearly always briefing and management failures rather than supplier failures, which means the fix is on your side of the relationship.

Common mistakes

×Outsourcing a problem you have not defined.
×Handing over strategic direction along with delivery.
×Choosing on price and being surprised by the standard.
×No review rhythm, so drift is discovered months later.

FAQs

What should I never outsource?

Understanding your customers, your positioning, and the final judgement on what the business says. Execution is fair game.

Freelancer or agency for outsourced marketing?

A freelancer for one deep specialism, an agency where you need several skills and continuity. Both need a clear brief.
