I still remember my very first trip to Kempegowda International Airport (or KIA, as most of us call it).
I was groggy from an early morning cab ride, clutching my filter coffee like it was a life raft, when suddenly the airport’s massive canopy came into view.
And trust me, if you’ve ever been stuck in Bengaluru’s infamous traffic for two hours before a flight, seeing that canopy feels like spotting an oasis in the desert.
Over the years, I’ve had my fair share of arrivals and departures here.
Rushing to catch late-night red-eye flights, waving goodbye to family at Terminal 1, and even once waiting six long hours for a delayed connection (thank you, duty-free coffee shops, for keeping me sane).
What fascinates me about this place is how it has grown from being “just another airport” when it opened in 2008, to now being one of India’s busiest, swankiest, and dare I say, most photogenic airports.
(Seriously, just type “Kempegowda International Airport photos” on Google and you’ll see what I mean. Terminal 2 looks like it’s auditioning for a movie role.)
Kempegowda International Airport isn’t just where journeys begin—it’s where Bengaluru says hello, goodbye, and sometimes, ‘have one more filter coffee before you go.’
Named after Nadaprabhu Kempe Gowda I, the founder of Bengaluru, the airport is more than just a travel hub. It’s a proud landmark of the city.
Whether you’re a local heading out on a business trip, a student flying abroad for the first time, an aviation geek drooling over Airbus A380s, or even a fresher searching for “Kempegowda International Airport jobs for freshers”, this airport has a little something for everyone.
And let’s be honest: Kempegowda International Airport is often the first impression of Bengaluru for millions of travelers every year.
It sets the tone for what the city stands for. Modern, tech-driven, globally connected, yet still holding onto its garden-city charm.
So in this blog post, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know about BLR (yes, that’s the airport code you’ll see on your boarding pass).
Sprinkled with a few personal anecdotes and tips, so the next time you fly through, you’ll know exactly where to go, what to expect, and maybe even where to grab the best dosa before boarding.

In a rush? Here’s the cheat sheet to Kempegowda International Airport.

The Terminals

I snapped the shot below of Terminal 1 – KIA’s original terminal – on a sunny afternoon.
Terminal 1 was designed to handle about 35 million passengers a year.
It used to handle both domestic and international flights, but since September 2023, all international flights have moved to Terminal 2, making Terminal 1 now domestic-only.
The building has a distinctive curved canopy.
I recall wandering its lower and upper floors, from check-in (below) to departures (above).
Gates 41–42 at T1 are even built for giants like the Airbus A380!
(Funny: I joked that the airport was so big it had to make special gates just for “Godzilla planes.”)
Terminal 1’s sweeping canopy greets you at Kempegowda Airport.
Now handling only domestic flights, T1 can manage 35 million passengers per year.
Meanwhile, Terminal 2, a newer sibling, is truly state-of-the-art.
(I may have lingered to marvel at its “Garden City” design, with live plants woven into the architecture.)
Terminal 2 was inaugurated in November 2022 and opened to flights in early 2023.
The first phase (255,000 m²) alone added capacity for 25 million more passengers, and it features 95 check-in counters, 17 security lanes, and multiple electronic immigration gates.
By mid-September 2023, all international arrivals and departures were shifted to T2.
I even watched the first Saudi flight (SV867 from Jeddah) arrive there on 12 Sep 2023.
Now T2 handles all international flights, plus some domestic flights (like Air India and Star Air).
The modern glass-and-steel Terminal 2 (opened 2023) handles KIA’s international traffic.
Its “Garden City” design and airy spaces impressed me on my visit.
Getting To & From the Airport

Back in the city, one of the most common questions is “How do I get from Majestic to KIA?”
(Majestic, or Kempegowda Bus Station, is Bengaluru’s central hub).
The good news: BMTC runs Volvo AC buses (called Vayu Vajra) directly between Kempegowda Bus Station and the airport.
These Airport Bus (Vayu Vajra) buses depart roughly every 30 minutes.
I once hopped on an early morning bus around 6:15 AM. It was pretty empty, and the journey took about 1 hour and 15 minutes to the airport.
In general, expect about 1 to 1.5 hours by bus (traffic and stops can slow you down), for a fare of maybe ₹100–150.
It’s the cheapest way; according to travel guides, the bus is “the cheapest way” at about ₹100–250.
The bus picks up in Majestic/Kempegowda Bus Station and drops off outside the terminal area.
- BMTC Vayu Vajra bus: Frequent service from Kempegowda Bus Station (Majestic) to KIA. Takes ~1–1.5 hours (depends on time of day).
- Taxi / Rideshare: A cab from Majestic to the airport is about 34 km and typically takes 30–45 minutes by car. I often use an Ola/Uber for comfort; a prepaid taxi from the official kiosk is also an option.
- Driving: If you drive, take NH44/Outer Ring Road. (Pro tip: avoid Bangalore peak traffic if you can!)
- Metro (Future): Good news – the Namma Metro is being extended to reach the airport by around 2026.
- Airport Shuttles: Some hotels and private companies run their own shuttles, and many app-based cars serve the airport 24×7.
No matter how you travel, leave extra time. Bengaluru traffic can be sneaky.
(Fun fact: I once arrived 3 hours early just to find the highway choked. On the upside, I had 3 extra lassis.)
Inside the Airport: Shops, Lounges, and Directory

(Source: Kempegowda International Airport)
Once inside KIA, you’ll find the usual trappings of a big modern airport.
Duty-free shops, restaurants, lounges, and all sorts of services.
Terminal 1 has a pair of lounges (the “BLR Domestic” lounge and the new “080 Lounge”) celebrating local culture.
Terminal 2’s international area is adorned with retail shops and duty-free outlets.
If you need help, info counters and digital directories are available.
The Kempegowda Airport directory (the airport’s official listing of shops and services) is posted online and on-site, so you can plan where to eat or buy a Bengaluru keychain.
I appreciated the clean, bright signage (no getting lost in a maze here).
Other handy facilities: free Wi-Fi throughout the terminal, ample charging points, a range of ATMs, and currency exchange booths.
Flight information screens and an official “arrivals live” tracker (on the airport website) help you see real-time arrivals and departures.
For some humor, I once told my travel buddy the luggage carousel looked like an endless sushi conveyor. But sadly, there’s only coffee to eat, not sea urchin.
Kempegowda International Airport: Flight Information

One of the first things I check (especially if I’m running late, which, let’s be honest, happens more often than I’d like) is the flight status.
Thankfully, Kempegowda International Airport makes this super easy.
Whether you’re flying out of Terminal 1 or Terminal 2, you can get live information on arrivals and departures directly from their official website.

It’s a lifesaver if you want to avoid sitting at the airport twiddling your thumbs when your flight is delayed (or worse, sprinting through security because you didn’t realize your flight was on time for once).
At the Kempegowda International Airport: Culinary Delights

Whether it’s grabbing a quick chai or sipping a pint while plane-spotting, there’s something for every palate.

Whether you forgot to pack something or just want to indulge in a bit of shopping, Kempegowda International Airport feels like a mini mall.
From Indian handicrafts to international luxury brands, you’ll find it all here.
Some highlights:
- Accessorize – Trendy women’s fashion accessories.
- Arcelia by Shoppers Stop – Fragrances with a story.

- Duration: From 1 hour up to 5 days.
- Requirements: Boarding pass, ID/passport, ticket copies, and contact details.
- Maximum size/weight: 90x75x43 cm and 32 kg.
It’s especially handy if you want to step out and explore Bengaluru between flights without hauling your giant suitcase everywhere.
Travel Tips & Anecdotes
- Check-in and Security: KIA staff are generally efficient. On a busy evening, I saw short queues thanks to many security lanes in T2 (it has 17 lanes!).
- Food & Drink: Terminal 1 has good South Indian eateries (dosas and filter coffee, yum!), while T2’s international departure level has cafes and bars. Don’t miss trying a local majjige huli curry if you spot it.
- Dress for Success: Bengaluru can be chilly in AC (it’s known to blast the air conditioning), so I always carry a light shawl or jacket.
- Accessibility: The airport is well-equipped with elevators, ramps, and assistance for passengers with reduced mobility.
- Currency: Though India is largely cashless now, I always keep some rupees handy at the airport. There are ATMs on each level, but it’s good to have a little cash for autos or tips.
Future & Expansion

KIA is not standing still. In fact, BIAL recently approved a huge expansion plan.
A five-year, US$2 billion Master Plan to prepare for 100+ million annual passengers.
The upgrades will refurbish Terminal 1 and complete the second phase of Terminal 2, plus reserve space for a brand-new Terminal 3.
I read in the news that they’ll also add a Western Cross taxiway and bump up aircraft stands from 140 to 230.
If all goes well, the airport will even have an automated people-mover linking terminals in the long run (for when we finally build that secret underground chocolate factory… just kidding, maybe).
The Metro extension will be huge. They say by 2026, we should be able to hop off the purple line right at KIA.
Jobs and Careers

(Source: Kempegowda International Airport)
For job-seekers, KIA (operated by BIAL) often has openings in areas like airport operations, security, retail services, and more.
Freshers might find on-the-ground jobs (baggage handling, customer service, security) or trainee positions.
Keep an eye on the official careers page (BIAL or Bengaluru Airport website) and local job portals for “Kempegowda Airport” listings.

Full disclosure: I haven’t applied myself, but after seeing their solar-powered terminal, I half-jokingly asked HR if being a human solar panel counted as a job qualification. 🤷♂️
